CentraleSupélec is a leading French 'Grande École' and a public research university. It operates under the joint authority of the Ministry of Higher Education and Research and the Ministry of Industry. Its core missions include educating high-level global and specialised engineers, Bachelor’s and Master of Sciences, conducting cutting-edge research in engineering and systems sciences, and providing continuing professional education programs. As part of its development, CentraleSupélec is opening a position for a Professor in Computer Science. The successful candidate will be affiliated with the Computer Science Department and will conduct research within the Mathematics and Computer Science for Complexity and Systems Laboratory (MICS).

The Computer Science Department aims to cover the entire disciplinary scope of computer science across all CentraleSupélec programs. It actively contributes to teaching in the CentraleSupélec engineering curriculum, the Master of Science and Bachelor programs of CentraleSupélec, the Master’s programs of Université Paris-Saclay, as well as continuing education.

The Mathematics and Computer Science for Complexity and Systems Laboratory (MICS, EA4037) at CentraleSupélec focuses on the mathematical and computational analysis of complex systems and data, whether they arise from the life sciences, industry, social sciences, information science, or networks.

Teaching responsabilities

The successful candidate will join CentraleSupélec's Computer Science Department and will contribute to teaching computer science across all types of programs offered by CentraleSupélec (engineering curriculum, Master's and Bachelor's programs), with priority given to the Department's Bachelor programs in computer science. The ability to teach in English to an international audience is essential.

The recruitment aims to address significant teaching needs in the fields of the position, in particular:

•        Core courses in computer systems : computer architecture, operating systems, compilation techniques, systems and low-level programming, concurrent/parallel pro-gramming.

•        Foundations of programming and languages : programming, data structures and algorithms, and principles of programming languages, taught to international Bachelor-level cohorts.

•        Research-linked teaching : the successful candidate may also take part in teaching activities linked to their research work (project proposals, case studies and super-vised projects in research-oriented tracks).

Given the level of the position, the successful candidate will be called upon to take on the role of Academic Coordinator of one of CentraleSupélec's Bachelor's programs in computer science, in particular the joint CentraleSupélec – BITS Pilani Bachelor's program in « Computer Science & Artificial Intelligence ». This dual-degree program, taught entirely in English, follows a 2+2 format : the first two years take place on BITS Pilani's campuses in India, and the last two years on CentraleSupélec's Paris-Saclay campus. As Academic Coordinator, the successful candidate will be responsible for:

•        Leading and supervising a team of instructors contributing to the program : orga-nizing teaching workloads, mentoring and supporting instructors, and ensuring the overall quality and consistency of teaching.

•        Being the main academic point of contact for international partners — notably BITS Pilani in India, as well as associated industrial partners — to ensure proper coor-dination between the parts of the curriculum delivered by the partner and by Centrale-Supélec, and consistency of academic requirements between the two institutions.

•        Overseeing and coordinating the program's curriculum : designing and conti-nuously improving the program structure and syllabi, ensuring pedagogical coherence and progression, monitoring learning outcomes and quality, and supporting student progress throughout the 2+2 track.

•        Representing the program within the Department's and School's academic bodies, and contributing to its development, visibility and international outreach.

Research responsabilities

The successful candidate will be expected to develop a high-impact, internationally visible research activity in the field of efficiency, scalability and sustainability of computing, and to play a structuring role within the host laboratory. As Professor, they will be expected to build and lead a research activity, secure competitive funding (e.g. ANR, Horizon Europe / ERC, industrial partnerships), supervise doctoral students, and contribute to mentoring junior faculty.

We are seeking a senior researcher with extensive experience in one or more of the following areas: design and adaptation of parallel algorithms and algorithm-architecture matching to maximize efficiency in heterogeneous shared-memory environments (multi-core, GPU accelerators, edge computing) or emerging environments (TPU, FPGA, neuromorphic chips); large-scale deployment (scalability) and distributed systems (Cloud/HPC), including massive parallelization, memory management, fault tolerance, and latency reduction for interconnected intelligent systems; sustainability, green computing, and energy efficiency. The successful candidate will have a proven track record of relevant and original research contributions in these areas, combining a deep understanding of models, methods, and systems with a strong interest in practical applications.

The successful candidate will be encouraged to develop collaborations within CentraleSupélec and the Université Paris-Saclay ecosystem, as well as with the School's industrial partners (for example in aeronautics, defense and embedded systems). Initiating broadly defined collaborative research projects, and developing international partnerships, including with the School's academic partners, will be an important part of the role.

The candidate will join the ARCADE team (Learning, Reasoning, Computation, Axiomatization, Decision, Estimation).

Profile

Qualifications and Experience

Candidates must hold the Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches (HDR) or an equivalent qualification/level of experience recognized for a professor position (for international candidates, an equivalent track record demonstrating independent research leadership). They must demonstrate excellence in both research and teaching, with a publication record of the highest international standard, and a proven ability to lead research, secure funding and supervise doctoral students.

Given the coordination responsibilities attached to the position, candidates must also demonstrate leadership, organizational and interpersonal skills : experience leading or coordinating teaching teams, curriculum design, and collaboration with international and/or industrial partners will be a significant asset. The ability to teach in English and to thrive in a strongly international environment is essential for this position. A command of the French language is not a prerequisite.

Interview process

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an interview, which consists of three stages, allowing us to assess your suitability for the position: 

1.      Candidates will present their academic background and their teaching and research project. 

2.      Each candidate will demonstrate their teaching skills by presenting a lesson in English, addressing a common problem specified in the audition invitation.  

3.      Candidates will then respond to questions from the committee members. 

The interview invitations will state the duration for each stage.
